What is Baptism?

Answer

Baptism is a next step in the life of a follower of Jesus. It’s going public with your commitment to Jesus by being immersed in water. Baptism is a symbol of what Jesus has already done in your life when you became a follower of Jesus. The immersion in water represents that you’ve already been saved and united with Jesus —that He washed your sins away, gave you new life in Him, and has reconciled you to God!

What if I was already baptized as a follower of Jesus?

Answer

If you have already made a decision to follow Jesus and been baptized by immersion, you do not need to be re-baptized. However, some people choose to be baptized again as a meaningful way to identify with Grace Church and this body of believers, publicly sharing their story of saving faith in this new season of life. We see this not as a requirement, but as a special opportunity.

Why should I get baptized?

Answer

If you’ve made a commitment to follow Jesus as the leader of your life, getting baptized is an important next step and act of obedience in your faith journey. When people get baptized at Grace, they get to share their story of how Jesus changed their lives! Baptism is an opportunity to go public with your faith in Jesus.

If I was baptized as an infant, should I get baptized again?

Answer

We are grateful for the faith tradition and family commitment that often motivated infant baptism. However, the Bible teaches that getting baptized is a personal decision that happens AFTER someone has already been saved. When a follower of Jesus gets baptized, they’re declaring that they’ve already chosen to believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sin and that He is the leader of their life.

When should I get baptized?

Answer

If you’ve made a commitment to follow Jesus as the leader of your life, then you’re ready to be baptized. The specifics of the day and time you will be baptized are up to you and may be determined by many different factors. However, if you’re a follower of Jesus and you’ve never been baptized, this is your next step. What better time than now?

Question 6

What happens on Baptism Sunday?

Answer

Baptism is a feature of the Sunday morning service. The life-change stories of those being baptized are read by our hosts prior to each baptism. Each person being baptized will be fully immersed in water 3 times, once in the name of The Father, then of The Son, and finally of The Holy Spirit. After the story is read and the person has been baptized, everyone in the room celebrates! It’s one of the greatest things we get to do as a church.

Does baptism save me?

Answer

No. In Romans 10:9, Paul says that ‘if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’ That’s pretty simple and clear! Baptism isn’t a requirement for salvation. There’s nothing special or powerful about the water in the baptism tank. It does not wash your sins away or even finish the process of your salvation. Jesus did that and he didn’t need water to do it. Remember, baptism is simply an outward symbol of what Jesus already did when he saved you!

Who will baptize me?

Answer

You can decide who you want to baptize you based on the following qualifications: Anyone who baptizes at Grace Church must be a member of Grace Church. In most cases, unless the person baptizing is a pastor or a staff leader in the ministry the person is involved in, the person baptizing should be the same gender as the person being baptized. Only men should baptize other adult men.

My kid wants to be baptized. How do I know they’re ready?

Answer

It really comes down to the understanding of the child. Regardless of age, anyone who becomes a follower of Jesus must first ADMIT to God that they’ve sinned and that sin separates them from God. Then, they must BELIEVE that they’re forgiven by God only through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Finally, they must COMMIT to follow Jesus as the leader of their life. If they have enough understanding to clearly make that decision, they’re probably ready to get baptized. The good news is you don’t have to figure this out alone. Each child who wants to get baptized will meet with a staff member to talk through their decision. They’ll be able to help you and the child determine together if they’re ready to get baptized.
